“A gallery for design and a forum for personal expression.”
PEMA, LLC was founded in 2026, but the momentum dates back over forty years to visionary artist Pete Jackson. The company’s slogan, “A gallery for design and a forum for personal expression,” grew from Pete's recognition of the ever evolving negative messaging facing youth, and his use of multifaceted teaching methods in visual, performing, and martial arts to mentor them. That marriage of art forms was the foundation for Pete becoming a positive figure in the lives of countless youth.
“I learned very quickly that youth excelled when they had overlapping forums that supported them in expressing their ideas.”
Collaborative t-shirt and street art designs became one way for youth to share their wide array of messages, and the finished products demonstrated art's healing potential. While designing, starting there, the forums for expression and positive messaging continue. PEMA designs focus on taking complex issues, such as those in Pete’s surrealist paintings, and refining them into eye-catching, simpler designs. Through humor, in-your-face irony, subtle wordplay, political statements, and inclusive ideas, the PEMA brand supports diversity.
One example occurred in 2017, when he created and taught a dual credit class for high school students at Santa Fe Community College. The class was structured for high school students who showed artistic talent but weren’t sure they wanted to pursue higher education. With the goal of demystifying college campuses and professors, the class introduced students to most professors in the Art, Design, and Media Arts department through one- to three-day 2D and 3D workshops. Fashion, photography, fine woodworking, jewelry making, and drawing concepts were just a few of the classes. The semester concluded with a campus show with projects, such as cutting boards, ceramic cups, and metal sculptures. Parents who attended the shows most often commented that they wished they had a class like that when they were young. Pete looked to expand the project however, the class size had restrictions, and the concept behind PEMA was forming in Pete’s mind.
In the class development stage he learned that, statistically, youth who are introduced to at least 1 year of higher education in the arts are more likely to pursue and complete a degree, even in other fields. Virtually every student reported increased confidence as a result of the class. As significant that the statistic was, in Pete’s experience important all youth he worked with, even toddlers did better at the next level when they had the artistic license to play, create, and moreover, have reliable resources and support to express their challenges.
PEMA begins with Pete’s internationally diverse family and their expansive experiences and opinions. PEMA also lives within Pete’s strong belief in being a village member in the community. Now, one who can be considered an elder, he wishes to welcome and help raise the next generation of artistic thinkers.
